Aluminium weight calculator, by alloy and shape
Aluminium (aluminum, in the US) weighs 2700 kg/m³ in the alloys most bars, tubes and profiles are made of: 6060, 6061, 6063 and 6082. That is about a third of steel: a 20 mm round bar weighs 0.848 kg per metre, a 40 × 40 × 2 mm square tube 0.821 kg/m and 2 mm sheet 5.40 kg/m². The data sheets put the other common alloys between 2650 kg/m³ (5083) and 2810 kg/m³ (7075): pick yours in the list below.

Density of each alloy, from its data sheet
Ten alloys that bars, tubes, profiles and sheet are sold in, with the density each supplier’s data sheet prints. Each alloy opens the calculator with it.

The 5000 series carry magnesium, which is lighter than aluminium, and come out lighter; 7075 carries zinc and copper and comes out 4.1 % heavier. The temper (T6, H14…) does not change the density. The certificate of your batch, when it gives one, beats these figures.
Aluminium weight charts
Worked out by the calculator above at 2700 kg/m³ (6060, 6061, 6063 and 6082), from the nominal section with sharp corners. For another alloy multiply by its density ÷ 2700: × 1.041 for 7075, × 0.985 for 5754.

How this is calculated
Any extrusion weighs its section area times the density, however complex its shape: a window profile of 450 mm² in 6060 weighs 450 × 0.0027 = 1.215 kg/m. The area is on the die drawing or in the system’s catalogue; the calculator above covers the plain shapes.
What this page does not do
- No corner radii. Extruded and drawn sections have them, so a real tube or angle differs from these figures by a few per cent; the extruder’s or mill’s table governs.
- Nominal sizes. Wall and thickness tolerances, anodising and paint change the real weight a little.
- No strength. The alloy and temper decide what a section carries; this is weight only.
Questions people ask
- How much does aluminium weigh per metre?
- Its section area in mm² × 0.0027 kg, for 6060, 6061, 6063 and 6082 (2700 kg/m³). A 20 mm round bar weighs 0.848 kg/m, a 40 × 40 × 2 mm square tube 0.821 kg/m and a 50 × 5 mm flat bar 0.675 kg/m.
- Is 7075 heavier than 6061 or 6082?
- Yes, by 4.1 %: the data sheets give 2810 kg/m³ for 7075 and 2700 for 6061 and 6082. The 5000 series are lighter: 5754 at 2660 and 5083 at 2650 kg/m³.
- How much does a sheet of aluminium weigh?
- Its thickness in mm × 2.70 kg/m² in 6082, × 2.66 in 5754 and × 2.71 in 1050A. A 1250 × 2500 × 2 mm sheet weighs 16.63 kg in 5754 and 16.88 kg in 6082.
