Who is behind this
SyntaxFlow is published by HU Ingenieros, a software company in Madrid that has been writing business software since 1976. The reason a software company publishes glass engineering calculators is not a marketing one: among the things it writes is the ERP that glass companies run day to day — the software that quotes the job, works out the cutting, prices the laminate and issues the invoice. Decades of that leaves you with a very concrete understanding of which numbers people get wrong, and why.
Why these tools exist
Because we kept needing them, and because what is already online is often worse than nothing. A great many glass and glazing calculators on the web give you a single number with no formula, no standard, no assumptions and no indication of what they left out. Some of them are simply wrong. Others are correct but useless, because you cannot tell whether the answer applies to your case.
The rule we set ourselves is the whole product: if we cannot show you the working, we have not finished the tool. Every page prints the formula, the coefficients it used and the standard it came from, next to the answer. Every page has a section saying what it does not do. If you disagree with a result, you have everything you need to prove us wrong, which is the only kind of trust worth having in engineering.
Why they are free
Because they are not the business. HU Ingenieros makes its living from custom software and from the ERP systems it installs and maintains — over a hundred companies run them. These calculators cost us very little to publish and they are genuinely useful, so there is no reason to put a gate in front of them.
There is exactly one paid thing on this site, and it is deliberately small: the specification sheet can be printed without our name on the footer, so the document you hand a client is entirely yours. That is the only paid extra, it is a one-off, and every calculator stays free with or without it.
How each tool is checked before it goes up
- A worked example on every page, verified against the code. The numbers in the "worked example you can check by hand" block are not typed by us from a textbook — they are checked against what the page actually computes, and they have caught real mistakes.
- The standard is named, not implied. EN 16612, EN 1991-1-4, ASCE 7, EN 673, EN ISO 10077-1, EN ISO 6946, EN ISO 13788, EN 12831 and the rest are printed on the page that uses them, so you can go and read the clause.
- National values are flagged as national. Barrier loads, wind maps and design temperatures differ by country. Where we have used one country's annex, the page says so and tells you to check your own.
- Nothing you type is uploaded. Every calculation runs in your browser. There is no account, no server-side maths, and no input of yours reaches us — which also means we cannot help you recover it.
The one thing we do load, said plainly
A site that makes a privacy claim its selling point ought to disclose what it does load, so: these pages carry Cloudflare Web Analytics. It is a few hundred bytes and it records that a page was viewed and how fast it loaded. It does not use cookies, it does not fingerprint you, it does not follow you between sites, and it never sees anything you type into a calculator — those values never leave your browser at all.
We keep it for one reason: it is the only way we know whether any of this is being used. There is nothing else. No tag manager, no advertising pixel, no chat widget, no third-party fonts. A calculator page is five requests and about 18 kB in total, and one of those five is that beacon.
What this is not
We are software engineers who have spent a long time inside the numbers of the glass trade. We are not a structural or building-physics consultancy, and nothing on this site is a signed calculation. These are pre-dimensioning and screening tools for people who already know the subject: they are for deciding what to specify, for checking whether a quoted figure is sane, and for understanding where a number comes from.
Before anything is ordered, built, or submitted to an authority, it needs the responsible engineer's own calculation against the code that actually applies to the project. Every tool here says the same thing in its own words, and we mean it.
