Sheet metal weight calculator
A metal sheet weighs its thickness in millimetres times its density in g/cm³, in kilograms per square metre. One millimetre of steel is 7.85 kg/m², of stainless 304 7.90, aluminium 6082 2.70, copper 8.94, brass 8.44 and titanium zinc 7.20. So a 1250 × 2500 × 2 mm steel sheet weighs 49.06 kg, and the same sheet in aluminium 16.88 kg.

A whole sheet, per millimetre of thickness, kg
Multiply by the thickness in millimetres: a 1500 × 3000 × 3 mm steel sheet weighs 3 × 35.33 = 105.98 kg.

Coatings (galvanising, paint, film) come on top of these figures.
How this is calculated
That last line is the whole trick: 7.85 for steel, 2.70 for aluminium. Gauge numbers are not used here, because the same gauge is a different thickness in steel and in aluminium sheet: enter the thickness itself, in millimetres or inches.
What this page does not do
- Nominal thickness. Rolling tolerances change the real weight a little; coatings (galvanising, paint, film) add to it.
- Flat sheet only. Chequer (tread) plate, perforated and expanded sheet weigh differently: use the maker’s figure per m².
- No bending or strength. For the flat length of a bent part, see the bend allowance calculator.
Questions people ask
- How do you calculate the weight of a metal sheet?
- Length × width × thickness × density. In practice the thickness in mm times the density in g/cm³ gives kg per m², which you multiply by the area: 2 mm steel is 15.70 kg/m², and a 1000 × 2000 mm sheet, 2 m², weighs 31.40 kg.
- How much does a 1250 × 2500 mm sheet weigh?
- Per millimetre of thickness: 24.53 kg in steel, 24.69 kg in stainless 304, 8.438 kg in aluminium 6082 and 27.94 kg in copper. Multiply by the thickness in mm.
- Is aluminium sheet lighter than steel?
- Yes, about a third for the same thickness: 2.70 kg/m² per mm against 7.85 for steel. Copper (8.94) and brass (8.44) are heavier than steel; titanium zinc (7.20) a little lighter.
