Stainless steel weight calculator, by grade
Stainless steel 304 (1.4301) weighs 7900 kg/m³ and 316 (1.4401) 8000 kg/m³, so 316 is 1.3 % heavier for the same size; ferritic 430 (1.4016) weighs 7700 and duplex 2205 (1.4462) 7800 kg/m³. A 42.4 × 2 mm tube weighs 2.005 kg per metre in 304 and 2.031 kg/m in 316; 1.5 mm sheet in 304, 11.85 kg/m².

Density of each grade
The grades tubes, bars and sheet are sold in, with the density at 20 °C that Euro Inox’s tables print. The low-carbon (L) and titanium (Ti) versions and 321 weigh the same as their base grade. Each grade opens the calculator with it.

How this is calculated
The grade changes only the density, so one ratio holds for every shape and size: 316 weighs 1.013 times 304, 430 0.975 times and duplex 2205 0.987 times.
What this page does not do
- No corner radii. Formed and rolled sections have them, so real tubes and bars differ by a few per cent; the maker’s table governs.
- Nominal sizes. Wall and thickness tolerances and the finish change the real weight a little.
- No corrosion or strength check. Which grade suits the job is another question; this is weight only.
Questions people ask
- How much does stainless steel weigh per cubic metre?
- 7900 kg for 304 (1.4301), 8000 kg for 316 (1.4401), 7700 kg for ferritic 430 (1.4016) and 7800 kg for duplex 2205 (1.4462). Per millimetre of sheet that is 7.90, 8.00, 7.70 and 7.80 kg/m².
- Is 316 heavier than 304?
- Yes, by 1.3 %: 8000 against 7900 kg/m³. A 42.4 × 2 mm tube weighs 2.005 kg/m in 304 and 2.031 kg/m in 316; a 6 m length, 12.03 kg and 12.18 kg.
- How do you calculate the weight of a stainless steel tube?
- Its section, π/4 × (D² − (D − 2t)²), times the density. For 48.3 × 2 mm: 291 mm² × 7900 kg/m³ = 2.298 kg/m in 304.
