IPE and HEB beam weight
IPE 200 weighs 22.4 kg per metre; HEB 200, 61.3 kg per metre. The number is the height in mm; an IPE is a narrow-flange beam (200 × 100 mm), an HEB a wide-flange one as wide as it is tall (200 × 200 mm), which is why it weighs almost three times more. The tables give each size per metre, per foot and per 6 m and 12 m bar, the lengths they are sold in.

Masses per metre are the nominal values of the European standard sections (EN 10365), the same in every steelmaker's catalogue to the first decimal; the rolling tolerance on mass is ±4 %. For a section that is not here, or a welded plate girder, the metal weight calculator works from the dimensions.
Questions people ask
- How much does an IPE 200 weigh per metre?
- 22.4 kg per metre: 134 kg for a 6 m bar and 269 kg for a 12 m bar. Its section is 200 mm high and 100 mm wide.
- What is the difference between IPE and HEB?
- IPE beams have narrow flanges, about half as wide as the beam is tall; HEB beams (wide flange) are as wide as they are tall up to 300 mm. An HEB 200 (200 × 200 mm) weighs 61.3 kg/m against 22.4 kg/m for an IPE 200.
- How do you calculate the weight of a steel beam?
- Multiply the mass per metre from the table by the length: an IPE 300 of 7.5 m weighs 42.2 × 7.5 = 317 kg.
