Steel round bar and TMT rebar weight per metre

A 12 mm steel round bar weighs 0.888 kg per metre (0.597 lb/ft). For any diameter: kg/m = d² ÷ 162.2, with d in mm, because the density is 7850 kg/m³ (carbon steel). Rebar standards (EN 10080, IS 1786) define the nominal mass of ribbed bar from the nominal diameter with the same density, so the chart holds for TMT and B500 bars too.

How it is worked out

Weight per metre = area of the section × density. A round bar's area is π × d² ÷ 4, so kg/m = π × d² ÷ 4 × 7850 ÷ 10⁶ = d² ÷ 162.2. A piece is that times its length in metres.
